Over the following days, the situation worsened. Nile reached out to Centillion and Centillion outright refused to help, creating further hostility between enclaves across the planet. The conflict that had begun between Isodor and Nile was threatening to act as a spark ready to set off the tinder boxes that were intercorporate relations.

Closed up in their apartment, Maxim and Sabine watched as events unfolded. Sabine pleaded with Maxim to run away, but he insisted on staying. It was safer to be in a place where they were guarded by superior technology than to go running away. Besides, he wanted to see Isodor’s defeat for himself, and what better place to do it than from their apartment, which was high enough to look out over Nile territory where the smoke was still rising amid the rebellion.

There was footage of the chaos, footage Maxim told Sabine to stop watching, but that he could not tear himself away from either.

The feeds showed that people were turning on the technology, tearing it from buildings, cutting wires, smashing anything that had any kind of complexity to it. They were giving in to Isodor’s rhetoric, filled with excitement and hope, the chance for something new. They didn’t know that the something new wasn’t necessarily any better, and would probably be a whole lot worse, they just knew they wanted change.

“What are they doing?” Sabine’s question held a note of panic.

“People are defecting to his army. There were a lot of poor people in Nile territory, looking for something to make their lives feel meaningful. Isodor has given them the stimulant of the masses—rebellion.”

“Why would they do that?”

“Because they’re idiots,” Maxim growled under his breath. “They will starve now. There’s no food grown in that enclave.”

“But there’s a lot of food grown in Ere,” Sabine pointed out.

Maxim ground his teeth. With her simple comment, the full brilliance of Isodor’s plan was suddenly made apparent. Carve out a central enclave, claim territory and manpower, and feed the people with Ere’s production.

They had been sitting and waiting, assuming that they were safe because of Centillion’s superior technology. What he had not counted on was Isodor’s ability to not only drive out Nile, but to go further. It was very possible that he had already begun negotiations with Centillion. The capture of the Nile enclave was so complete, so perfect that Centillion were probably spooked. If it came down to handing over two citizens, or being faced with the same kind of invasion, he already knew what they would choose. They didn’t know that Isodor’s invasion was being staged from a backwards realm. For all they knew a new and incredibly powerful faction had just emerged.

“We need to go,” he said, standing abruptly. “Now.”

“Why?”

“We have to go,” he repeated, grabbing a bag he’d already filled with essentials for if the worst came to worst. He got Sabine dressed in a more modest and form-covering outfit that would provide her some protection from the elements, and together they made for the front door.
